Survival of Ukocono!

Large Cast Children's Play

Survival of Ukocono

Author: Cheryl D. Duffin

Once every seven years, the invisible Amazon island of Ukocono becomes visible to the outside world! For their own safety, and that of their unspoiled rainforest, the Ukocono tribe must keep the island safe from intruders. But when a cast of kooky characters—including three shipwrecked surfer dudes, an English scientist and her assistant, and a real estate developer and his lumberjack friend—show up to investigate the mysterious island, the delicate balance of the tribe's rainforest home is threatened. With roles for performers of all levels, Survival of Ukocono is a rainforest comedy that will entertain and edify.

Olympic Fairytale (childrens - large cast!)

11 Female/9 Male (20 total roles +)

The Olympic Fairytale has roles for 20-25 kids, as you may add an additional Maid or Knight role to expand your cast as necessary.

The Olympic Fairytale also unique for its casting flexibility. If you are three actors short of being able to cast the show - simply remove one of the scenes with three characters, and subtract their lines (or redistribute as necessary) from the final scene. So, you would remove the scene with the Butcher, Baker & Candlestick maker....or you could remove the scene with Jack, Giant and Mysterious Old Man (or woman). If you're two actors short - remove Red and the Wolf.

Additionally, many of the roles in The Olympic Fairytale can be cast with either gender to accommodate your needs. Princesses can easily become Princes or the Wolf, Knight, Jack, Giant, Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker can all be female. The original production had a female Jack and it worked quite well. Don't concentrate on Jack being a boy, simply concentrate on the character of Jack and it works out just fine.

Roles:
Cinderella
Fairy Godmother
Wise Wizard
1st Princess Daughter
2nd Princess Daughter
Maid #1
Maid #2
Knight
Tatiana
Butcher
Baker
Candlestick Maker
Little Red Riding Hood
Wolf
1st Blind Princess
2nd Blind Princess
3rd Blind Princess
Jack
Giant
Mysterious Old Man (M.O.M)

Description: Cinderella is now the Queen and living happily every after, right? Wrong! King Charming is always away on business and with maids and servants to attend her every need, Cinderella has grown bored in her castle. So, the Fairy Godmother and the Wise Wizard have decided to 'create' something for the Queen to do! While the Wise Wizard keeps Cindy busy cleaning up messes at the castle, the Fairy Godmother has gone out into the woods to stir up some trouble for Cinderella to focus on. A host of fairytale characters turn up at the castle and Cinderella enlists her own form of Olympic Games to solve their disagreements!

Cute, funny and fun to perform!

The Olympic Fairytale was originally performed by Esperanza Summer Theatre in Houston, TX.

Jack & the Bookstalk (5 Roles)

You read that right: Jack and the BOOKstalk

It's the tale AFTER the tale.....after Jack has cut down the beanstalk! Jack - fresh out of magic beans - trades his pet mouse for some magic seeds. But instead of a beanstalk, a magnificent book-bearing stalk grows in the garden. A disappointed Jack decides to cut down the bookstalk...until a few unexpected visitors drop by. Filled with fairytale characters facing everyday fairytale dilemmas, Jack finds out the importance of reading!

2-5 performers for 5 roles
30 minutes - one set

Jack
Fairy Godmother
Red Riding Hood
The Hare
Goldilocks

This is a smaller cast show, but lots of fun for kids to perform for other kids.
I performed this show with my son (then 8 years old) who played the role of Jack.
I played the other 4 roles by changing key costume pieces. We performed this show
over 50 times at libraries and day cares in Texas. The audiences really enjoyed this
show and we received great feedback on the performances. Itwas certainly great fun to perform.

I had my 2nd graders at the Esperanza Summer Camp perform this show in the summer of 2007 for the other summer campers (grades 1-5). We had a girl play the role of Jack, so feel free to bend teh rules of gender when casting. The Fairy Godmother can easily become a Fairy Godfather! The Hare can be a girl or boy!

Center Stage Kids!

Need a play that kids can perform for kids? Need a play that has appropriate language and characters for kids? Need a play for kids that is entertaining for the audience and fun for the kids to perform? Having trouble finding one?

I did too!

I'm a professional playwright and summer theater camp teacher. I studied playwriting, acting and directing at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Tx. I lived and worked in theater in Chicago for six years, and before you ask (because people always do) -- YES, I am published. I also write and perform one-woman shows for children at day cares and libraries around Texas.

There are lots of playwrights out there, many writing for young actors to perform. However, I teach theater at Esperanza Summer Camp and was having trouble finding interesting stories that were appropriate for the kids to perform. Many of the plays I read were too 'childish' for the kids to perform or had totally inappropriate language. For example, we don't allow the children at Esperanza to call each other names, such as 'idiot'....yet, the new plays for kids I found had that kind of language in it.

I also had a great deal of trouble finding plays with enough roles for everyone. Our program started out with just a few kids, but has quickly grown over the last seven years to nearly 30 kids that all want roles! Some of the kids just wanted to be on stage and not have any lines. Other kids wanted lots of lines! It was tough to find a play that would incorporate all the elements I needed to balance.

I realized I should probably write the plays myself, thereby controlling the language, number of roles and quality of storytelling & characters.

I have several plays for large cast youth to perform. Roles range from beginning levels to more experienced youth actors. Some of the plays are published and you will need to contact and pay royalty to the publisher. Other plays are still royalty free if you can meet the criteria (easy).

Peruse the play descriptions and let me know if you'd like to view a script. I can be reached at: cherduffin@sbcglobal (dot) net
